Montana’s Glacier National Park is a national treasure. Spanning nearly 1,600 square miles (over one million acres), the park is home to 762 lakes, 563 streams, 175 mountains, and 25 glaciers. It also offers visitors more than 700 miles in trails for hiking.

The glaciers, for which it is named, are seriously impressive. The main attraction is typically considered to be Many Glacier. This is due, in large part, to the abundance of lovely hikes it features, including Grinnell Glacier trail and the Iceberg Lake trail, the park’s two most popular.

The stunning panoramic views probably don’t hurt either.

Sadly, while 25 glaciers may seem impressive, in 1850, when the park was first being explored, it boasted 150. What’s even more disheartening is the fact that climate change scientists posit that by 2030 the remaining 25 will disappear, as well.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

The park is one of the largest intact ecosystems in the continental United States, earning it the monicker, “Crown of the Continent.”

Home to thousands of plant species and hundreds of animal species, including the largest population of grizzly bears in the country, the park has been well-preserved, continuing to protect much of its original ecosystem.
