In 2012, nearly 12 million Filipinos did not have access to electricity. Frequent power outages, faulty wiring and high costs plague many of the residents who do have power. Sustainable Alternative Lighting, or Salt Lamp, offers them—or anyone—a safe, clean and affordable way to light up the night.

Safe

Unattended lighting and cooking sources were responsible for 70 fires in Metro Manila during the first two months of 2015, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection in the Philippines. The Salt Lamp's simple, saline-powered cell poses no fire risks, and the lamp is easy and safe to use.

Cost-Effective

Two hours of light from a traditional incandescent bulb costs the average American over $4. That's $20 a day to run five light bulbs—or $7,300 a year—for just 2 hours of light. Salt Lamp provides 8 hours of light for the cost of 2 tablespoons of salt and a glass of water. For residents along the Filipino coastline, saltwater is a plentiful free resource.

Oh yeah, it will charge your phone.

Versatile

In addition to providing a sustainable alternative lighting source, the Salt Lamp also serves as a charging station for mobile devices. The lamp integrates a USB slot to accommodate battery-powered electronics, making it an ideal companion in an emergency situation or in the event of a natural disaster.

How to Get Yours

The developers of Salt Lamp plan to make the product available to consumers by late 2015 or early 2016. As of August 2015, a price has not been announced. If you're interested in buying a Salt Lamp, you may contact the Salt team via the company website or Facebook page.

However, commercial production is not a priority for the company. Local communities and nonprofits are served first, and then the company will work toward meeting the production demands of the general public.

Struggles with lighting are not limited to the Philippines. Those in rural Rwanda often don't have access to it, either. The rechargeable LED lamps distributed by Lights of Life provide African students with light to read and study at night, increasing their chances for success in the future. Please consider donating to give the gift of light.
